Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in Stuttgart, Germany, the Porsche company did not initially manufacture its own cars. Instead, it received assignments to design cars under the names of other companies. One such car is the internationally recognisable Volkswagen Beetle. Designing this vehicle brought the two companies closer, and began a relationship that has lasted ever since.
Porsche’s first production car was assembled in 1948, following the war. A luxury sports car that filled a gap in the market, the Porsche 356 was first built by Ferdinand’s son in an Austrian sawmill. It utilised components from the VW Beetle initially, though these were phased out as the 356 was refined. The car’s exterior was designed by the man responsible for the Beetle’s bodywork.
The company’s success continued after the release of the 356, and ultimately Porsche became a more popular brand. The company even found some success in motor sport. However, in 1964, one of the manufacturer’s signature cars came into being. The Porsche 911 has seen many incarnations since its inception in the mid-Sixties, yet it remains one of the company’s most desirable and successful cars. It was even named the best premium sports car on the market in 2015 by Car and Driver.
Porsche had even more success in racing after the production of the 911. The 911 Carrera RSR model won the Targa Florio, Daytona and Sebring during the Seventies. They posed a significant threat to rival company Ferrari. Another of Porsche’s racing cars, the 917, managed to earn the company their first 24 Hours of Le Mans win. Porsche has been dominant in the race since, with 18 overall victories. Porsche engines also brought the McLaren team 25 victories in Formula One.

One of the company’s classics, the Porsche 911 has been a popular car since its creation in 1964. With half a century of refinement under its belt, the 911 is truly one of the best cars to drive. Not only is it a good looking and powerful machine, with most able to go from 0-60mph in just under 4 seconds, it is surprisingly practical. The interior isn’t to be sniffed at, either. This car is so luxurious, you’ll want spend time admiring its delightfully crafted cabin before you set off.
